E-SETI (Extended SETI) project explained by a E-SETI scientist

E-SETI (Extended SETI) project explained by a E-SETI scientist.

The E-SETI Project was initiated by Richard Kerr in order to expand and enhance the possibilities of SETI by combining the work of scientists and writers and using new computer programs and internet networks to spread the idea of active SETI as well as to find new sources for alien intelligence.

The E-SETI Project was launched on the internet as a Web site on July 5th 1999. As of 2007, the E-SETI Project continues as a group of scientists and writers and a group of volunteers who contribute to it.

SETI is the acronym for Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.

The term “SETI” is also used in the field of Astronomy to describe the study of star and planetary systems. Astronomy is the study of the origin, history and ultimate fate of the universe.

What is SETI?

A search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) is the search for intelligent life elsewhere in the universe.

In practice, it involves observing stars and other objects that are near enough to Earth for their radio and/or other emissions to be detectable.

Some methods for SETI involve listening for signals in a particular range of frequencies (radio waves), while others look for very specific signals or signatures (e.g. modulation of emissions, or bursts of emissions).

While any type of intelligent life is scientifically plausible, most SETI efforts concentrate on civilizations that would use electronic (radio, optical) signals and transmit in a range of frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum.

The range of frequencies that are most actively sought is in the frequency range of one kilohertz (1GHz) to one gigahertz (10 GHz), which can span a total of 1,000,000,000,000 (1 Giga) frequencies.

Most SETI projects work in that same frequency range but work on both ends of the spectrum. For example, there are a number of SETI projects that work at high frequencies, such as SETI@home. There are also SETI projects working in the low-frequency end of the spectrum.

The SETI@home program is one of the largest online-based SETI projects, and consists of volunteer distributed computing projects which are run on the SETI@home website. Another example is the International Arecibo Observatory.

The Arecibo Observatory is a large radio telescope located in Puerto Rico. It is not a SETI project but rather a project that has SETI aims. The Arecibo Observatory has detected over 4,000 pulsars and 4,700 extra-solar planets.
