Jay Young explains mathematically why a zone defense is bad.

In an attempt to garner support from fans for exclusively playing Man to Man defense, Jay Young formally published a complex “proof” in mathematics today magazine demonstrating that man to man defenses are good and zone defenses are bad. Scholars are referring to this “proof” as the Youngorean Theorem, a Theorem, which might be embraced by Pythagoras himself if he were alive today. Of course if he were alive today Pythagoras would be known, not just for his famous theorum but for being the oldest person alive. Despite some compelling mathematics in Young’s theorum, some coaches have rejected it because it is based on probablity. But Young says he will take his chances on it just the same. Mathmatics department chair
Stephen Sawin suggests Young may have a decimal missing in his calculations, and Jim Boheim feels he may have a point. Sawin points to the 6 straight lay-up attempts yielded by Fairfield’s man to man versus Yale as evidence of holes in the theory and in Fairfield’s defense. But Young stated that even if there is only a 40-40 chance he is right, it is unlikely Jay he will step out of his “comfort zone” and play anything but man to man.
